Behind the Scenes of the Wheel

With our Wheel of Fortune episode airing tomorrow, I thought it’d be fun to share with you a little inside information about our experience!

1. The day of our taping, we arrived at the studio at 7 AM.  The entire morning was spent reviewing the rules of the game, signing papers, getting our make-up done, and prepping to be on the show.  This included practicing our introductions, spinning the wheel and solving a puzzle or two. Shows started taping at noon.

2. Wheel of Fortune tapes an entire week of shows in just one day.  So the coordinators group the couples in threes and then each group pick a number (1-5) to see which show you would be on. We were really hoping to be one of the first groups so we could head to the beach for the remainder of the afternoon. However, to our disappointment, our group picked #5.  This meant we sat in the audience and watching the taping of 4 other shows prior to getting our swing at the Wheel. When we left the studio, it was already dark outside. So now when we watch the Wheel on Friday nights, we have compassion to those contestants knowing they have had a full day already!

3. Not only did we have to sit through all five shows, but my mom and brother Brian did as well.  They had to arrive at 11am and since we were not allowed to have any contact with them, they were there until we were taped.  They were troopers and we were so thankful to have family in the audience for us! A big thanks for their support!

4. Yes, we BOTH are wearing make-up. You’ll more than likely notice Jimmy looks more “air-brushed” and smooth than normal! Also, you’ll see my lipstick color is definitely not one I would choose. But when you are going on National Television, it’s not really up to you! ☺  And in between every commercial break, our make-up artists would come to touch up our make-up.

5. The amount of interaction you’ll see us have with Pat and Vanna on the show is really the only interaction we had with them. We didn’t get to meet them before our show, chat with them afterwards or take any pictures with them.

6. The wheel is SIGNIFICANTLY smaller than what it appears to be on TV.  I read this before going on the show but was still amazed by how small it actually was!  Actually, everything was smaller than what we expected- the studio, the audience size, the board and yes, the wheel definitely! They really work camera angles to make things look bigger! It’s Hollywood… of course they would!

7. Contrary to belief- the wheel does not have a break on it.  Some people think that when Pat goes to spin it when time is up, they “break” the wheel to stop on a big money wedge. This isn’t true as it would be “unfair” and illegal in game show rules. There is a third party who oversees every aspect of the show to make sure everything is completely fair.

8. It’s completely different solving puzzles on the actual show verses the comfort of your living room. When you are actually on the show, it’s over-stimulating as there is so much to think about: spinning the wheel, who’s calling the letter, looking at the used letter board, making sure you are smiling, trying not to clap into the microphone, attempting to figure out the puzzle, and then trying not to make a complete fool of yourself on National Television! It’s an adrenaline rush for sure!

9. We really did meet some great people! If you watched this week, you saw all the contestants that we spent that day of taping with.  There was even another pastor and his wife on that we really enjoyed getting to know!

10. My husband is amazing, encouraging and so funny and I loved sharing this unique experience with him.  I could have not asked for a better game show partner and life partner!

Thanks for sharing in our fun journey with us and we sure hope you enjoy watching our episode tomorrow night! ☺
